The original was found in Dura Europos (Syria). Roman scuta provided soldiers with excellent protection and permitted the testudo formation (turtle formation). The shield is constructed from several layers of wood and is covered with dyed linen. Its length is 108 cm and its width is 72 cm. It weighs about 6 kg.
